Sugar Cookies

Sugar Cookies

Time: 10 min +1 hr Chilling Time

Freezes: Dough only

Kid Friendly Tasks: Icing

picture the scene, each kid carefully dressed in their Amish made aprons. We took turns adding ingredients to my big stand mixer. Then we pulled out just my old Christmas cookie cutter set from William-Sonoma. It has, despite its preppy origins, served me very well. It has a nice mix of 12 shapes. Then I rolled out half of the dough on a floured counter and we took turns choosing which shape to cut out. Every cutter got a turn at the dough, Santa and his sled were particularly popular, his reindeer not so much. We only made one of those. Then we rerolled, cut more and baked all of our cookies. I made icing out of powdered sugar, corn syrup and milk. We chose 4 colors, green, blue, red and yellow and I spooned the icing into Ziplock bags. Then the kids got to pipe it out into the cooled cookies. Seriously cute to watch.

Classic Borsch

Classic Borsch

Kid Friendly Tasks: Beet Coloring

I decided to resurrect their borsch and started digging on my favorite Russian cooking sites. These are always so fun to compare with ours because the writing style is almost a 180 from our own cooking blogs. Here everything is step-by-step with a ton of gorgeous pictures. There you get exactly one small picture and an approximation of ingredients. Russian women, it’s assumed, already know how to cook. Since that approach so often mirrors my own (note the total absence of step-by-step photos) their sites are an instant hit with me. Anyway, using about a dozen “standard” recipes I mashed them together into the new favorite below.

Almost Apple Dumplings

Almost Apple Dumplings

Serves: 8

Time: 1 hr

Reheats: Yes

Kid Friendly Tasks: Apple Stuffers

So there I was with a small basket of apples (8 total) staring at me, begging me to turn them into dessert. Visions of pie danced in my head but that seemed so same-y. Then I decided just what I wanted- apple dumplings! I LOVE apple dumplings but I never have them/make them because they always seem like more work than apple pie and most places don’t serve them as a dessert so I don’t eat them out. I set to work googling for a good recipe.
