Chinese Orange Peel Chicken

Chinese Orange Peel Chicken

Serves: 3

Time: 20 mins

Kid Friendly Tasks: Juicing Oranges

This recipe is seasonal because it’s the best time of year to buy juice oranges to use fresh in this recipe. It’s so sweet even my kids will eat it making it a favorite winter weeknight meal. Try it instead of take out as you watch the snow fall (or in my case, cold rain).

Kid Friendly Tasks: Potato Masher

I’ve decided, as I so often do when faced with challenges, to make soup, potato soup specifically because I seem to be out of a lot of other ingredients around here. This soup is fast to make because boiled, not baked despite the name, potatoes are its base and those can be ready in 20 mins or so. If you happen to have some bacon grease or bacon bits I would totally add them to this soup (I didn’t so they aren’t listed below.)

Turkey Dry Brine Recipe

Turkey Dry Brine Recipe

Time: 24hrs

Every year I stare at Thanksgiving and it stares back at me. This is odd when you think about it because I love to cook and I love to experiment and I love to have my kids in the kitchen. However, I don’t normally cook a meal with a main course, four sides, a bread item and three different desserts so perhaps that’s where my trepidation comes from. Regardless, I’m all for anything that makes Thanksgiving a little more predictable and makes the whole enormous turkey thing worthwhile and tasty. I think I have finally found my full bird recipe!

Kid Friendly Tasks: Dumpling Maker

It’s getting cold out and farmer’s market season is coming to a close. Sad face. Even though I rag on them sometimes I still love going and shopping and talking to people, seeing all of the seasonal produce and snagging new ideas. There is only one week left at the market so I’ve been stocking up on meat from my favorite suppliers. This week I bought a whole chicken with this, a favorite winter chicken dish in mind. I like this recipe because it’s fast enough to use up a whole chicken during the week, yet still makes a great, filling chicken soup.

Kid Friendly Tasks: Peeling Onion

As we are firmly in the fall season and headed towards winter it seems the perfect time to start once again with my soup postings. This stew is hearty, rich, but not particularly heavy. I love to make it with a side of mashed potatoes (even though it has potatoes already in it) or buttermilk biscuits to sop up the sauce.
