Berliner Donuts

Berliner Donuts

Serves: 3-4

Time: 1 hr + Rising

Kid Friendly Tasks: Powdered Sugar Sprinkler

Ich bin ein Berliner. I suppose it’s mandatory to start with that, certainly after tasting the recipe below. These fabulous donuts came to me from a Postcrosser in Germany who kindly sent me the recipe and now has me in the mood to revive my German. I love international recipe exchanges. Foods I wouldn’t even think of make their way to my door and I’m always a fan of trying them out. We got my son’s favorite soup recipe that way and have discovered a lot of new classics.

Kid Friendly Tasks: Bread Shredder

So this is different than my usual recipe format today. This one isn’t really a recipe. It’s more of a cooking advice column. What to do when something is either starting to get old on you or didn’t turn out perfectly. Let me tell you my tragic tale of adversity and triumph. So first off, I made potato chips at home. Very good, but very bad for you. Also, they happened to use of the rest of my vegetable oil. Then, I made apple cider cake, not realizing that said cake required vegetable oil and that we were now completely out. So I upped the butter slightly and skipped the oil. The cake was good, but dry (shock there) So what to do? Answer, make apple cider cake bread pudding.

Basic Brownies. The title says it all. These are the brownies that you make when you just want something basic, chocolaty and comforting. They haven’t been dressed up with nuts, caramel or frosting. They are simply good brownies, the kind that everyone loves to eat.

Dessert Crepes

Dessert Crepes

Serves: 4

Time: 5 mins prep + 4 hr resting

Reheats: Yes

Kid Friendly Tasks: Stirring the Batter

These crepes aren’t just about a fast weeknight dessert to use up some leftover batter. They also make a wonderful breakfast anytime. Omit the Nutella (or not…) and fill with fresh fruit and you have a very tasty cousin to a pancake. My other favorite use of sweet crepes is for a picnic breakfast!
