Berliner Donuts

Berliner Donuts

Serves: 3-4

Time: 1 hr + Rising

Kid Friendly Tasks: Powdered Sugar Sprinkler

Ich bin ein Berliner. I suppose it’s mandatory to start with that, certainly after tasting the recipe below. These fabulous donuts came to me from a Postcrosser in Germany who kindly sent me the recipe and now has me in the mood to revive my German. I love international recipe exchanges. Foods I wouldn’t even think of make their way to my door and I’m always a fan of trying them out. We got my son’s favorite soup recipe that way and have discovered a lot of new classics.

Strawberry Jam

Homemade Strawberry Jam

Time: 20 mins

Freezes: Yes

Kid Friendly Tasks: Berry Pickers

Yeah for spring and strawberry season! I corralled my three, mostly willing, helpers (hey there was the promise of ice cream from nearby at the end) and we set off on a grand picking adventure. After the usual hour it took to lotion everyone up and put on hats we set out towards the strawberry fields. The first thing we learned, other than that the berries were plentiful, was that my toddler had no interest in picking. However, he was very interested in the part where you put the berries in the bucket. Lucky for us his older sister agreed to be a team with him. She picked and he dropped the berry into the bucket while his brother struck out for parts unknown in search of the largest berries

Black Raspberry Jam

Black Raspberry Jam

Time: 20 mins

Freezes: Yes

Kid Friendly Tasks: Berry Pickers

It was pretty miserable and my husband would say, “tell me again why we do this.” So I made jam to answer that question. It was superb. Face it, you cannot get enough black raspberries at a decent price any other way to make jam. And what jam it is! Because of the natural pectin in the berries’ seeds you just mix equal parts berries and sugar, cook until thick and can as you always would. I don’t like Ball’s recipe because it’s a bit too sweet for me. This jam is divine on toast and in cookies. I’m hoping that when we open jars of it, deep in the middle of winter we’ll think fondly back of that warm June day when we all went picking. Pity it didn’t actually happen.

Sweet Kolaches

Sweet Kolaches

Serves: 4

Time: 3 hrs

Freezes: Yes

Reheats: No

Kid Friendly Tasks: Jam Spreader

Several months back we tried kolaches as a fun treat. They are new to Columbus (if you’re from Texas don’t laugh at me) and tasted good, if slightly pricy. The bakery we went to sold a sweet and savory version. I made the savory version for dinner with the leftover sausage (which, alas turned out only okay, but I’m not sure why exactly.) and the sweet version the following day filled with my lovely peach butter. Peach butter is thicker than regular jam, has a more even consistency and is slightly less sweet (My husband complained that my peach jam was super sweet, teeth shatteringly so. I pointed out that I used a full cup less sugar than the recipe called for. My kids, BTW have no such objections to the stuff.) The sweet version were excellent. Soft, lovely and a perfect marriage with the peach filling. These are definitely on my breakfast list.
